Yet our modern, industrial food, the air we breathe and our environment are loaded with toxins and pollutants. We also know that, over time, these products are dangerous and damage our health. In fact, even though the liver has the power to cleanse itself, 'toxins' accumulate and end up clogging it up. The body's detoxification system uses the skin (via sweat and sebum), liver and gallbladder (bile), kidneys (urine), lungs (breathing), lymphatic system (lymph) and intestines (faeces) to eliminate toxins.
The accumulation of internal toxic substances (produced by our own organs by breaking down nutrients, plus bacteria, fungi, yeast, hormones, stress) and excessive external substances (pollutants, by-products of cooking, frying, chemicals, additives, alcohol, tobacco, medicines) means that the body can sometimes no longer cope.
The liver becomes sluggish and less reactive, which means that certain toxins remain in the body for longer.
