A calcaneal spine is a spine-like bony outgrowth that can form in the calcaneus (heel bone). This usually comes from irritation of the plantar fascia – the tendon membrane at the bottom of the foot. This is why it is also called plantar fasciitis. Overworking of the Achilles tendon promotes the formation of such bone growth, which in this case appears on the top of the calcaneus. Long-term overload pulls on the periosteum and bone calluses and calcifications – what is called a calcaneal spine – appear.

Most of the time, a calcaneal spine is not visible to the bare eye, but only by radiography.
