The warmer months bring many pleasures, but they also bring with them a number of discomforts that are all too familiar to seniors: heavy legs, swollen ankles, visible varicose veins, tingling or burning sensations. Heat exacerbates venous problems and weakens circulation. If you suffer from circulatory problems, don't despair: there are many natural and effective solutions to relieve your legs and restore comfort.

Why does heat aggravate vein problems?

Blood circulation is already under strain when veins lose their tone. In summer, several factors aggravate the situation:

  • Veins dilate: Under the effect of heat, blood vessels dilate, slowing down venous return.
  • Blood stagnates: It accumulates in the lower limbs, causing heaviness and swelling.
  • Water retention: More common in hot weather, it accentuates oedema.
  • Summer lifestyle: Less physical activity, prolonged sitting, saltier diet.

The result: varicose veins become more visible, legs tingle and feel heavy.

Recognising the main symptoms

Circulatory problems manifest themselves as:

  • A feeling of heavy legs, especially at the end of the day.
  • Tingling or numbness in the feet and ankles.
  • Appearance or worsening of varicose veins (blue, dilated veins).
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles.
  • Sometimes night cramps.

If these signs become painful or if sudden redness appears, consult a doctor immediately.

Simple things you can do to help

1. Drink plenty of fluids

Staying well hydrated improves blood flow and reduces water retention.

  • Drink 1.5 to 2 litres a day, mainly water.
  • Limit alcohol and fizzy drinks, which can cause dehydration.

2. Move your legs

Movement activates venous return. Even in hot weather, it is important to stay active:

  • Walk every day, preferably early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Do a few ankle flexions and extensions, especially if you sit for long periods of time.
  • Elevate your legs for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.

3. Cool your lower limbs

Cold is a valuable ally:

  • Shower your legs with cool water, working your way up from your feet to your thighs.
  • Apply a circulation gel (menthol, red vine) for a soothing effect.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing.

Tip: avoid direct exposure to the sun, which dilates the veins.

Magnetic therapy: natural support for circulatory disorders

Magnetic therapy can provide significant relief if you suffer from heavy legs and varicose veins. It works in several ways:

  • Stimulation of microcirculation in small vessels.
  • Anti-inflammatory and relaxing effect, reducing the feeling of heaviness.

Magnetic devices (magnets, magnetic cushions, magnetic leg rests, etc.) can complement other measures. They are simple to use and non-invasive.

Adapt your diet

Diet plays an essential role in vein health:

  • Eat plenty of red fruits and citrus fruits (antioxidants and vitamin C strengthen the vessels).
  • Increase your fibre intake (to avoid constipation, which aggravates venous stasis).
  • Limit salt, which is responsible for water retention.
  • Eat omega-3 (oily fish, walnuts) for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Sleep with your legs elevated

Venous return improves when the legs are elevated. At night:

  • Slide a pillow under your mattress at the foot of the bed.
  • Avoid crossing your legs when lying down.

This simple gesture can reduce swelling when you wake up.

Important: If your pain becomes severe, if you notice localised heat or redness, or if swelling appears suddenly, consult a doctor immediately.

Take care of yourself this summer and keep your legs light and in great shape!
